Hey Hey Hey!
You made it to Part 3! Congratulations!
Now, we want to group, prioritize and set goals along those lines. I want you to use exercise 2 to define your goals for 2017. Now, this exercise is for short term goal setting to build the foundation for the Long Term Goals and/or roles you desire to play.
Get your notebook, pen and lots of water. Are you ready?
Dream Big, Paint Your Picture: What would your perfect *insert category/role* look like?
Remi’s Perfect Money
– 0 debts
– At least 30% of all income in savings and investments
NG’s Perfect Fitness – Health
– 60kg to match her 5’5″ frame
– Ability to run a half marathon and not faint
– A 25″ waist line
What is your current status?
Remi’s Current Status
– owes N280,000 in total (to friends and family)
– 0 in savings
– Earns N150,000 a month
NG’s Current Status
– weighs 80kg
– can’t climb the stairs
– A 30″ waist line
How can you get from Step 2 to Step 1?
When do you want to go from Step 2 to Step 1?
Remi wants to pay off N280,000 and still have 30% in savings by January 2017.
NG needs to lose 20kg and 5″ round her waist while getting strong enough to run the Lagos City Marathon in 19 days.
Is this timeline realistic?
For Remi, it can be. 30% of N150k is N45k a month. By January 2018, N540k in savings. For the debt repayment, N280k/12 = N24k a month. If Remi does not get an increase/decrease in income between now and January 2018, Remi will have to learn how to live on N81k a month. Can Remi do this?
For NG, not really. 18 days to lose 20kg naturally is a bit far-fetched. NG needs to adjust her timelines and maybe she can try for the Lagos City Marathon next year. Is that more realistic?
Let’s leave Remi and NG and focus on ourselves. Answer the questions in bold for each category/role and honestly assess yourself.
Another Style of Goal Setting I admire is to have an overall blueprint with a deadline. For example, when Maya Elious turned 24, she wrote a list of 100 things by categories she’d like to have achieved by the time she turned 35. See here: http://www.mayaelious.com/100-life-goals/
All these goals were categorised and made public and she goes back to update them when she completes them. Her Categories include: Experience, Financial, Business, Travel, Charitable, Physical, Family and Skillset. Is this an approach you do not mind adopting?
Whatever style you approach, the key thing is to WRITE IT DOWN and review each goal for your life categories and roles by answering the below questions:
- Is my goal clear?
- Is my goal something I can do within a particular time frame?
- Am I honest with myself?
The last question usually is the most difficult: Will I do what I have said I will do?
I want to help you answer that in the next post: Achieve my Goals. It should be up in about 48-72 hours, giving you time to finish this exercise. I have faith in you, do you have faith in you?
Let me know how this exercise goes for you and remember to share it with your friends and family.
Love and Light,
